Residential & Nursing Care Home in Kent

Brimming with character
Meyer House offers a distinctive home-from-home environment at the heart of the local community. Registered Manager, Gill Redsell (known fondly as ‘Captain’), has managed the Home since it opened back in 2006. She embraces all staff and residents as her ‘Meyer family’ and is dedicated to making a difference to every person, every day.
A home from home
Each of our 28 rooms has en-suite and shower facilities, and lift access to the first floor makes it easy for our residents to move freely around the Home. In addition to our relaxed and welcoming lounge area you will also find ‘Nana’s Parlour,’ a quaint and charming living room decorated in a traditional style and embellished with décor and furnishings from years gone by.
Bedrooms have been elegantly designed and decorated and we encourage our residents to bring in belongings to create their own individual space. We take time to prepare each room, ordering furniture and furnishings, whilst taking on board personal likes and preferences.
Whenever possible we enjoy making the most of our outside areas by planting bulbs and flowers, hanging baskets and relaxing in the fresh air. With plenty of seating areas for residents and their families, we can often be found enjoying cream tea and mocktail afternoons in the sun!
Activities and recreation
Being so close to the town centre allows us to make the most of local shops, restaurants and attractions. Erith is a very wheelchair-friendly town and we often walk or take the bus for trips to the cinema or lunch in one of the many cafes and restaurants. For longer days out we enjoy visiting the beautiful gardens at Hall Place or walking along the Thames Walkway or Gravesend Promenade to watch the boats go by with an ice cream in hand.
Our Recreation and Well-being team provides activities 7 days a week and no two days are ever the same at Meyer House. All interests and hobbies are encouraged, from baking and karaoke, to arts and crafts and traditional games. We also regularly welcome entertainers, petting zoos, magicians, pantomimes and a local school steel band – anything that creates interaction and fills our Home with fun and laughter!
In the last year we have been wheelchair ice-skating at Ruxley Manor Garden Centre and even transformed the Home into the set of Oliver Twist – backdrops and costumes included! Another very special event that everyone looks forward to is ‘Pie, Mash and Liquor Day’ when a Pearly King and Queen bring some good old cockney spirit and cheer to the Home.
We make sure that every aspect of personal care and well-being is offered to our residents which includes visits from external professionals such as chiropodists, speech therapists and eye care specialists. We also have our very own hair salon and hold ‘pamper days’ for the ladies and ‘barber days’ for the gentlemen.
Something new we’re also excited to offer at Meyer House is ‘interactiveMe’ – an online memory tool packed full of photos, music and videos all about your loved one. This online life-story creates an amazing talking point, sparks conversation and allows our Carers to get to know everyone better.

Dining experience
Our light and spacious dining room and kitchenette are at the very heart of the Home; not just as a place to enjoying meal times, but for socialising and welcoming family and friends to join us whenever possible. And join us they do! Our home-made dishes and treats attract a lot of attention, as do our monthly themed menu days including Italian, Indian and Caribbean to name just a few.
Menus are created around our residents and their individual preferences, but we always make sure to include classic favourites such as pie and mash and fish and chips. Our local fruit and veg man is a regular visitor and always on hand to deliver any last minute requests.
Food is very important to the ongoing health and well-being of everyone in our care and Nellsar’s Nutritional Therapist, Leni, works alongside our Carers, Nutritional Champions and Chef to ensure that each person’s needs are met to keep them in the best possible health.
Supporting the community
As a passionate charity campaigner, Meyer House Manager Gill Redsell has received recognition and awards for the many events she has arranged and money raised for charities including The Salvation Army, Macmillan, Air Ambulance, fire fighters and the local hospice. With the support of staff and relatives, Gill has organised sponsored walks, themed events, a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and even a produced a 2018 Meyer House calendar starring staff in fancy dress!

Dedicated staff
‘Our residents do not live in our workplace, we work in their home’. This principle is wholeheartedly embraced by everyone who works at Meyer House and many of the staff have worked alongside Gill, The Home Manager, since the very beginning including Brenda (Cook) and Val (Laundry). Gill’s own husband, Alan, has looked after the maintenance of the Home since 2011 and Leigh started out as a Care Assistant before becoming an accomplished Care Practitioner (as well as an excellent artist and part-time Cook). All staff are fully trained, have a unique role to play and are committed to making every day special… and fun!
We’d love to show you around Meyer House and tell you more about our care services and facilities.

A message from the Manager
Hello, my name is Gillian Redsell and I am the Manager of Meyer House Care Home in Kent. The Care Home opened in December 2006 and I have been the Manager since the very beginning. In that time, we’ve seen many changes to both the inside and outside of the Home – all designed to continually improve upon the living and working environment for our residents and staff. Meyer House is situated in a residential area of Erith, and the neighbouring houses are very supportive of the Care Home and the work we do here.
Meyer House is a Nursing and Residential Care Home for the older person who needs support and care to ensure that they lead a fulfilled, safe and enriched life.
